Again and Again

Romans 12:2

English Standard Version

2 Do not be conformed to this world,[a] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.[b]

We all have these moments. You thought you had forgiven someone. You thought that you had moved past the hurtful things that they either did or said. You prayed about it, made peace with it. Forgiving them, because God forgave you.

Then, they do “it” again. “It” being the thing that you believed you had moved past. It’s the thing that they promised wouldn’t happen again. It enrages you. It makes you re-feel all of the hurt and anger that you thought was behind you.

A friend and I just discussed this, how we all have these thoughts; if I’ve forgiven them, shouldn’t they stay that way? Why do these feelings of resentment and hurt come roaring back up to the surface? I believe in Jesus, I follow Jesus, shouldn’t I be beyond this?

Then we begin to kick and criticize ourselves. Compound that with the old feelings that have suddenly become current, and we feel horrible.

The good news is, this is not a new phenomenon, nor is it only you. It’s a condition of our humanity. Romans 3:23 tells us that everyone is sinful - born that way, and continue that way. Our sin is why the grace of Christ is a necessity in our lives.

This is why we’re told in Romans 12 to daily renew our minds. Things get stale up there. Sometimes the room of our minds needs a bit of housekeeping. So daily, we check in with our hearts to see if what was forgiven is still forgiven. Daily we check in with our minds to make sure our attitudes match the example Jesus set. Daily we repent. Daily we forgive.

Otherwise, these moments will sneak up on us. That person will do that thing. Trust me, they will. In that moment, you’ll need to renew your mind. In that moment, you’ll need to forgive them, and yourselves. Knowing that you will again, too.
